10 Week Introduction to Project Sewing

Core Lesson Content

The “Golden Rules” of Safety

  • The “No-Fly” Zone: Keep fingers two inches away from the needle at all times.

  • The Power Rule: If you aren’t sewing, your foot stays off the pedal (machine) or the needle goes into the pincushion (hand).

  • The Eyes Rule: Never look away from the needle while the machine is moving.

Hand-Sewing Introduction (Week 1 & 2 Focus)

  • Threading & Knotting: The “double-over” knot vs. the “quilter’s knot.”

  • The Big Three: 1. Running Stitch: For basic seams. 2. Backstitch: For strength (the hand-sewing version of a machine stitch). 3. Ladder/Hidden Stitch: For closing up pillows and toys.

Pattern & Fabric Tips

  • Grainline: Explain why fabric stretches one way but not the other.

  • Seam Allowance: Why we don’t sew right on the edge (the “3/8 inch” or “1/4 inch” rule).

  • Right Sides Together (RST): The most important phrase in sewing—always remind them to put the “pretty sides” facing each other!
