🪡 Foundations in Textile Design & Spatial Engineering

Course Overview

Welcome to Stitch by Stitch! This online curriculum is designed specifically to introduce middle schoolers to the rewarding world of textile arts in a way that feels achievable, creative, and fun. Over the course of the class, students will develop fine motor dexterity, tool safety habits, and practical spatial awareness as they learn to transform flat fabric into completed, useful projects.

Instead of a heavy, stressful portfolio, students will build their own Interactive Studio Workbook as they go. They’ll use this to keep track of their technical notes, design ideas, and physical fabric swatches, creating a beautiful keepsake of everything they’ve learned.

How the Lessons Work

We’ve designed this course to be entirely self-paced and highly visual. Each unit follows a simple, stress-free rhythm:

Watch & Learn: Students watch a short, step-by-step video demonstration of a new skill or stitch.

Studio Practice: Students practice the technique on a small fabric scrap and log their sample in their Interactive Studio Workbook.

Create: Students apply their new skill directly to a fun, real-world project!

(Note: Complete dashboard navigation, video playback tips, and assignment submission steps are fully covered in Module 0.)

Digital Access & Pacing Parameters

60-Day Access Window: Families receive full access to the online dashboard, step-by-step video lessons, and digital resources for 60 days from their enrollment date. This gives students plenty of time to review techniques and re-watch tricky steps at their own pace.

Curriculum Parameters: While you have 60 days of total access to the course videos, please note that all formal grading and project reviews must be completed within the standard parameters and timeline outlined in the curriculum itself.

Purely Digital Format: This is an online-only curriculum. Physical kits and materials are not provided. A comprehensive master shopping list with exact measurements and store recommendations is included in your Module 0 welcome packet so you can source fabrics and notions that fit your student’s personal style.

Hand Sewing vs. Machine Options

We believe foundational skills come first! All the core projects and patterns selected for this middle school curriculum can be completed entirely by hand sewing using a simple needle and thread. No expensive equipment is required to get started.

However, if your student wants to transition to machine sewing—or if you’d like to invest in a sewing machine during the course—we’ve got you covered. The curriculum includes optional, introductory machine-literacy lessons covering basic setup, safety, and minor troubleshooting to help them smoothly bridge the gap from hand stitching to machine control.

📊 Studio Grading Breakdown

To keep the focus on building confidence and enjoying the creative process, grading for this enrichment course is simple, transparent, and completely free of stressful essays or exams:

40% Project Completion: Putting effort into completing the core curriculum projects (functional use over perfection!).

20% Studio Safety & Maintenance: Demonstrating safe tool handling practices and keeping a clean, organized sewing space.
